Meeting Minutes – October 11, 2023

Our President, Marilou Moschetti, called the meeting to order at 9:30 am.  Marilou graciously welcomed everyone to our new meeting facility, the Quaker Friendship Meeting House.  Marilou invited first time visitors/members to introduce themselves:  Susan Graziano and Sue Martinez, both new members, introduced themselves.

Treasurer, Susan Penney, provided a current Treasurer’s Report, see attached.

Our CNCH representative, Sharolene Brunston, gave a brief report on the next CNCH Conference, to be held in Rohnert Park, in the Sonoma Wine Country.  Conference registration opens Jan 12, 2024, but rooms at the DoubleTree by Hilton can be reserved now.

Program Coordinator, Roberta Valdez, thanked everyone for their participation in returning a Program Survey.  Roberta also mentioned that, even though the Program Survey has been completed, any and all suggestions of names and ideas for speakers are always welcomed and encouraged.

Librarian, Marsha Hein, mentioned that the library will be moving soon and that we are actively looking for a new home that will accommodate 3 large book shelves, as well as allow members convenient access to our library.  We have great books in our library, many of which are still very relevant but are now out-of-print.  Marsha had duplicate books at the meeting to be obtained with a donation.  She also featured the book Learning to Warp that could be checked out.

Kris Nardello, with the Dyeversities, spoke of an outreach opportunity at the Castro Adobe Historic State Park in Watsonville.  Kris’s Dyeversity Group was specifically asked to join Castro Adobe during their November 12th Open House where the Dyeversities could be featured, while demonstrating their skills.  Kris already has 18 SCTAG members registered to attend.  You don’t need to be a part of the Dyversities to demonstrate your skills.   If you’re not signed up, contact Kris for more details.  The State Park asks the attending public to register for various tours times – offered throughout the day – of the unique/historic 2 story adobe.  It is a fund time as the groups are ‘usually’ hugely interested adults.

Webmaster, Bruce Fihe, reminded us that both membership and workshop registration can be made online.  If using a credit card, there is a small percentage fee added, but this small fee is only to cover the guild’s cost of offering the convenience of online payment.  You can also register online and avoid fees by mailing in a check.

Marilou spoke of the Pajaro Valley Quilt Show, another outreach opportunity for our Guild, which is held the last weekend in February (Feb 24-25, 2024).  This show attracts 10,000 attendees.  Marilou suggested that interested members get together to purchase a booth at the event to sell their handmade items.  She emphasized that ‘items do sell’.  Please contact Marilou if you’re interested in participating.  Items must be completed and ready to sell by Friday, February 23rd.  There is a fee for the booth, which will be split between all participants.  Participants will receive the sale price of their items, less 10% which will be given to the Guild.  This will help keep our Guild, after 70 years, alive and well!

Susan announced that Joan Vierra is having surgery on October26.  A signup calendar was provided for anyone wanting to help during her recovery.

Marilou commented on our NEW meeting facility – yay!  She reminded everyone that our meeting in November is exclusively via Zoom and that a timely Zoom invite would be sent out.  The speaker, Kathleen Katte, will be speaking on the history of purses.  It should be very interesting!  If you have a handmade purse at home, please send a photo to Bruce, our Webmaster, to be shown via a screen share during the meeting.

Our Program Committee, LeAnn, Roberta and Jen, work hard in finding and bringing speakers that are interesting and pertinent to our group.  Please continue to let them know ‘who’ and ‘what’ you want to see in our programs and workshops.  They have arranged for our January Speaker and Workshop presenter, Youngmin Lee, who is internationally known and currently has an exhibit at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco.  Registration for this January workshop is already open for members.  It is requested that everyone attending workshops register online.  When registering you can choose to pay with a credit card (and pay a 4% fee) or mail in a check – you can choose when registering.

Special Interest Group: Dyeversities.  Peg announced that there will be a meeting on Monday 16th.  Peg also announced that she had a bunch of Silver Dollar Eucalyptus, which makes a lovely rust/red dye and/or beautiful Eco Prints, available after the meeting to share with interested members.

Special Interest Group:  Sew and So’s.  Will meet October 24th at Elizabeth’s, basically doing needle work.

Special Interest Group Newbies and Be Weave it or Not:  Joan announced that the groups are doing great.  She mentioned that the Big Weaving Group meets monthly in various member’s homes, in order to better know each other and to see how everyone deals with storing their stash.  The Newbie group is strong and continues to meet each Tuesday at Joan’s home studio.

Special Interest Group Basketry:  Meeting will be held October 20, at the home of Tina Jolly-Schmidt.

Special Interest Group Spinning:  Meeting will be held October 26 at the home of Marilou Moschetti.

Special Interest Group Mavens:  The outside spinning group, Mavens, usually meets within a day or two of our spinning group.  We will discuss changing the date of our spinning group, or perhaps combine groups.

Bruce reminded members to check the website and look under ‘events’ for dates.  But, he also reminded everyone that he needs to be given a date in order to log it into the website.

Show and Tell:  Jen showed a beautiful display of hand-spun yarn.

There was a short break to prepare for our speaker, Sharlot Elms.

Jen introduced our Speaker, Sharlot Elms, who gave a wonderful talk about the ethics and science of judging handmade items.  Sharlot provided much information in a very interesting and engaging manner.  One thing she urged everyone to do was:  to take the leap and enter items for judging and to ‘always’ take credit for your items by putting your name in them.  After the meeting Sharlot gave valuable judging tips on items that members brought.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:04 pm.
