Meeting Minutes – May 8, 2024

Meeting was called to order at 9:30 a.m.

Guests included Bethany from Prickly Poppy Farm, Christiane Young who makes wonderful pine needle baskets, and guests from the San Louis Obispo Weaving Guild and the Los Osos Weaving Guild.

The Treasurer presented the Treasurer’s report for the month of April.

All members were sent the proposed changes to the bylaws of the Conference of Northern California Handweavers (CNCH) and standing rules along with a comparison table between the existing documents and the proposed changes via email. The proposed changes were minor overall in nature.  SCTAG will have one vote on the proposed changes.  A motion was made to approve the changes and was seconded, and voted unanimously. Marilou will submit the Guild’s vote to CNCH this month.

The library has been moved to the Mid-County Senior Center (MCSC) and will be housed there permanently, which allows members to browse the collection and check out materials in person. The materials include books, oversized books, multimedia, and ephemera.  The books are arranged in alphabetical order by author or can be searched by topic on the website.  Marsha provided instructions on how to check out books via phone and will email the instructions. Donations are needed to defray the cost of renting out the space for the library materials.

The CNCH 2025 conference will be held at Asilomar and we are hosting it in conjunction with the other area guilds.  We will be responsible for the gallery, including setup and takedown.  Volunteers will be needed.   SCTAG needs to provide a timeline to CNCH by September.

Upcoming programs:

Roberta Valdez spoke of the proposed collaboration of the Monterey Metal Arts Guild (MMAG) with textile workers.  The MMAG will have a board meeting on Friday to vote on whether they want to proceed, and then our board will have to approve it as well.  The collaboration would involve an exhibit at the Radius Gallery at the Cannery next spring beginning in April and running six weeks into May.  The Radius Gallery charges a fee of $750.  Roberta is recruiting textile artists from the region.  We will need volunteers for 10 hours total over the six weeks to help staff the gallery.  The installation will begin in late March.

The guild needs volunteers and with this in mind, the Board has created descriptions of each position which will be available in the information book which is available during each meeting.  These positions are:

Program Assistant

Publicity – needs someone

Greeters – Melody

Librarian – Marsha

Motion to approve decisions was made, seconded, and voted unanimously.
