Who is the Santa Cruz Textile Arts Guild?

History

SCTAG has its roots in the Santa Cruz Handweavers’ Guild, which was formed in 1955.

In recognition of the diverse textile interests of its membership, the guild was reborn as SCTAG in 2018.

The guild is a member of the Conference of Northern California Handweavers Inc. (CNCH), a California corporation that has education as its sole purpose. Benefits of membership in CNCH include access to conferences, vendors, and workshops for guild members.

Mission Statement

The Santa Cruz Textile Arts Guild (SCTAG) encourages and promotes the spirit of cooperation among all those who practice – whether weaving, spinning, felting, braiding, basket making, dyeing, stitching – any creative activity that binds hands with fiber.

Outreach

THE YARNETTES The Guild has been working with blind and visually impaired weavers for over twenty years in a very successful weaving outreach program. Members of the self-named Yarnettes often win top prizes at the SC County Fair alongside sighted weavers without the judge knowing which is which. Guild members meet with weavers for a few hours each week to help choose materials, dress the looms, guide the weaving, and complete the finishing work.
