Meeting Minutes – September 20, 2023

Meeting called to order at 9:30 am.

Board Election: The acting Board needs to be voted in. Current acting Board members are:

Marilou Moschetti, President

Bruce Fihe, Vice President

Susan Penney, Treasurer

LeAnn Bjelle, Programs Chair

Amy Chirman, Secretary/Historian

A motion to approve the new Board was made and seconded. A vote was taken and passed unanimously.

Programs Committee members are Jen Dyer and Roberta Valdez. Immediate Past President is Joan Vierra.

Marilou is overseas and a message from her to membership was read.

The member website password has changed and was provided to members in good standing via email.

Treasurer’s report: Currently only about 1/3 of members have renewed. Name badges for use at meetings are made available for members in good standing.

County Parks made an error and booked our use of the Aptos Park clubhouse for Thursday and Friday of this week instead of today, so we are meeting on the clubhouse patio. The Guild will request a refund of today’s reservation fee.

The Programs Survey is available online at the Guild website and in print at today’s meeting. Please fill it out and return it to Roberta.

An Information Manual will now be provided to members at each general membership meeting. This manual will be maintained by the Secretary/Historian, and will include the Library shelf list, meeting minutes, Budget reports, CNCH Bylaws and, once updated, Guild Bylaws and Board/Volunteer job descriptions.

CNCH: Joan Near told us about the 2024 conference, “Enduring Fiber Roots,” which will take place at the Rohnert Park Doubletree by Hilton (Sonoma County) on April 25-28. Registration will open on 1/15/2024. The event gallery will seek small items (~10” x 13” x17”) from members to be showcased and auctioned for the attendance scholarship (which funds event registration, not room or board).

CNCH Area 1 (SCTAG, Carmel Crafts Guild, Anne’s Web, Black Sheep Handweaver’s Guild, Fiber Artisans, and Glenna Harris Weavers Guild), is responsible for presenting the 2025 CNCH conference. It will take place at Asilomar on April 24-27, 2025. Many volunteers will be needed to make this event happen! There will be approximately 200 participants and 13 teachers. Hopefully Return to Sender will be included again.

There are two Zoom meeting planning sessions scheduled, on Saturday Oct. 15 at 10:00 am and on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 10:00 am, where the theme, event colors, etc. will be decided. To participate, send Joan an email at joan.n@cnch.org/.

CNCH 2023 had great workshops and the people were great, but the venue didn’t work well for conference needs. No more campus use for CNCH, hopefully.

CNCH registration now and moving forward requires a room reservation.

Castro Adobe Open House: Sunday, Nov. 12, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Kris passed around a sign-up sheet for people to demonstrate fiber arts outside at the adobe. It doesn’t have to be an era-specific practice and costumes are not required. There can be multiple spinners, weavers, basket-makers, etc. Rain cancels the demonstration.

New Meeting Location: Effective the October general membership meeting, the Guild is relocating to the Santa Cruz Friends Meetinghouse at 225 Rooney St., at the Morrissey Blvd. exit just off the freeway on the inland side. Maps and directions were handed out, provided by Susan and LeAnn. Benefits of the new facility include more parking, centralized access, a second room for workshop use, a kitchen, and an outside patio. No food or beverages are allowed in the main room of the Meetinghouse, as it is the Friends’ sanctuary.

A carpool signup will be provided to members living in the south county as possible help with morning northbound highway congestion.

The October meeting program will be a presentation by Char Elms, an experienced fiber arts judge, on the topic of home-made vs. handmade.  Char is a member of the American Craft Council, a nationwide organization which sets the standard for judging.

The November meeting will be held via Zoom only. Please submit photos of your “show and tell” items to Bruce at bruce@aftonranch.net/.

January 2024’s workshop will be presented by Youngmin Lee, a Korean textile artist of Jogakbo, or patchwork bojagi. This will be a six-hour workshop and Guild members will have priority registration. Please see the Guild website for details.

Special Interest Group updates:

The Frequent Flyers spinning group needs a location for the 9/28 meeting. The Scotts Valley Library was suggested. Bruce will look into booking that space.

The Twisted Sisters tapestry group will meet next at Mountain Roasting on Thursday, 10/19 at 10:00 am. While all are welcome, this group is oriented toward those new to tapestry. The Eccentrics meets every Monday, mostly by Zoom, and is intended for those experienced with tapestry.

The Be Weave It or Not weaving group will hold the next big group meeting at Roberta’s house on Tuesday, 10/10. The group will be going to the Sierra Azul nursery to view the sculpture gardens.

Cathy Walls reported on the Santa Cruz County Fair, which closed on Sunday. There were 61 fiber arts entries. It would be great to up entries next year to help ensure the fiber arts space remains available in its current location. A list of all entry winners will be posted to the Guild website. Of note are Kris Nardello’s special ribbon for her felted purse and Sashiko jacket, Jenette Gross’ Best in Show ribbon for her wedge weave tapestry “The Last Iceberg,” and Joan Vierra’s Excellence in Weaving ribbon for her dress and jacket. A lengthy and wonderful show and tell occurred before the meeting was called to a close at 12:00 pm.
