SCTAG Meeting Minutes

Co-president, Joan Vierra, called the in-person meeting to order at 9:35 in the Aptos Village Park clubhouse. Three guests were asked to stand and were welcomed.

-By-laws

There was no further discussion after that at the April meeting, however, there was a request to repeat the calendar change to reflect that of CNCH, since that was the major part to be amended. No further comment or discussion. The proxy votes were called for and the vote of the members in good standing who were present was held by raising hands. It was unanimously approved to amend the by-laws.

-Show and Tell

Joan Near passed around her Swedish braids and spoke about using a warp spreader.

Janette Gross showed a striking wedge weave wall hanging entitled “Fire Sky” in which she used natural dyes on the weft. This was inspired by the colors of the sky and sunsets during the fires burning during August and September, 2020.

Carolyn showed her garlic basket from the last meeting of the basketry interest group.

Peg spoke about the field trip to the Castro Adobe in Watsonville taken by members of the Dyeversity dye group.

Mary Quinlin showed naturally dyed scarves and dye samples she’d created at the last Dye Day held by the Dyeversity special interest group.

-Guild equipment and yarn sale The sale will be held at Martha Stanley’s studio and home at 65 Nunes Rd., Watsonville, on Friday and Saturday, May 13 & 14, from 10:00-2:00. Please park down below except for dropping off passengers and picking up purchases. Laura Rider has printed directions if you need them.

The program was entitled “Grow Your Own Dye Garden” given by Peg McCullough and Kris Nardello. Through photos of their own dye plant growing methods and techniques for using some of the dye plants that may be grown in our central coast climate, they hoped to inspire the audience to try to grow their own. A plant list of wild and cultivated plants for dyeing as well as a page of on-line resources and references was available on the meeting reminder sent out on Tuesday, May 10th. It is now on our website as well. Seeds, seedlings, dried dye material and naturally-dyed yarns were available for sale after the presentation.

After a reminder of the next meeting being held at Anna Jean Cummings Park (Blue Ball Park) next to Soquel High School on June 8th, the meeting was adjourned at 11:40.
